He could hurt the dog without intending to, Roxanne. He isn’t used to the strength this new body has. Zara nudged me toward them with her big head. You need to establish control quickly or he’ll be a menace to everyone and everything around him.

Numbly, I rushed after him. I tapped Bazalor on the shoulder as I passed him. “A little help, please?”

Reluctantly, the gargoyle intercepted Jake before he’d recovered enough to reach Rand and Toby, placing himself between them.

Jake's forward momentum was brought up short, as he skidded and knocked everything off one of the tables with his wings in the process. I made it to his side, out of breath. Dutch and Clyde ran out of the house with several lengths of rope in hand, ready to constrain Jake.

“Whoa, guys! It’s okay. It’s just Jake.” I held up my hands. “Let’s not be too hasty.” I turned to Jake, cautiously reaching out to him. I dropped my voice to a soothing level. “Hey, boy. Look at you.” The

rest of the words that tumbled from my mouth were more nonsensical than anything, but they served their purpose and managed to draw Jake’s attention to me. Toby had stopped barking, though he still whined and strained against Rand’s hold on him. Jake sniffed at my outstretched fingers and then gave them a rather dry, raspy lick.

“Good boy. Stay.” I stepped around him and gently began working one of his wings into place against his back. He twisted his head around to watch me but stood still, thankfully. When that wing was neatly tucked down, I went around and did the same with his other wing, noting their leathery softness. He continued to watch me, panting contentedly. My mind raced in too many directions as I tried to keep my demeanor calm. How did this happen? Why did it happen? Had we done something wrong when we were rebuilding Lorag’s body? Or with the blood magick we’d used for the mortar? I left my mental shields down, so I knew Zara heard every thought. A quick glance over my shoulder showed that she was still in her big cat form, ready to step in if needed, but she was staring back at her brood. At Number Five, who was now curled up with her siblings, sleeping peacefully. I thought back to her small paw reaching up to Lorag’s heart stone and the chaos that ensued. What had she done?

At that thought, Zara's head swiveled back toward me, her ears flattened and her bright, green eyes unreadable.

Giving the second folded wing a gentle pat, I stepped in front of Jake and knelt down to look at his chest. Tess and Dana joined me.

Despite the pile of mortar on the ground, the spot over the heart stone was still completely closed over, not even slightly visible. I placed my palm over the spot, closed my eyes, and reached out with my magick. I felt a faint, thudding pulse there. Then another. It was slow, but it felt like a heartbeat.
